What can I expect to do in this role?

Under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent, Operations, you will:

  • Provide leadership, motivation and direction to Sergeants in a correctional environment
  • Manage, direct and assign, motivate and coach a large team of Operational Managers including: hiring, orienting and training of staff, developing a strong team, determining performance standards and conduct of performance reviews, dealing with performance management issues, and providing input to performance reviews of Correctional Officers, fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace; managing a broad range of often complex employee relations matters
  • manage overall programs of the institution to ensure public safety and the care, security and discipline of inmates
  • coordinate the review, formulation and implementation of institutional standing orders and local operating policies and procedures
  • ensure compliance to correctional control standards, policies, legislation and procedures
  • manage a broad range of often complex employee relations matters and ensure fiscal responsibility of staff and equipment
  • represent the program and security related matters of the institution with ongoing contacts (i.e. police, inmate advocates, Ombudsman, Custody Review Board, media, legal profession, judiciary, advocacy groups, the public, and others)
  • lead, manage and resolve a range of sensitive and contentious security/programming issues and related matters (i.e. investigations, performance management, incidents, labour relations, health and safety concerns)

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • you have knowledge of correctional institution management and administration including program delivery and evaluation
  • you have knowledge of the diverse and complex programs, systems and services (i.e. security system enhancements, modernized health care services, direct/indirect supervision model, fulsome program delivery system)
  • you understand OPS human resource and administrative policies, procedures, regulations, Collective Agreements, Ministry and OPS programs such as WDHPP and Workplace Violence Prevention Policy (WVPP)
  • you can interpret and apply of relevant legislation and policies (i.e. Ontario Human Rights Code, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Public Service of Ontario Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Provincial Offences Act, Criminal Code, Mental Health Act, Ombudsman Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and other related federal, and provincial statutes and regulations)

Leadership and Supervisory Skills:

  • you can develop related standards for management of daily activities by Sergeants
  • you can provide leadership and guidance to Sergeants and ensure compliance to correctional control standards, policies, legislation and procedures
  • you can direct, motivate and coach a team of Sergeants, manage a broad range of often complex employee relations matters and ensure fiscal responsibility of staff and equipment

Communication and Relationship Management Skills:

  • you communicate effectively and can prepare and present a broad range of materials to manage operations (i.e. standards, policies and procedures, program planning documents)
  • you can build and maintain strong relationships and contacts with stakeholders (i.e. police, judiciary, Custody Review Board, advocacy groups, etc.)
  • you are proficient with various computer software applications and databases (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)

Analytical and Investigative Skills:

  • you can remain calm and make effective decisions when handling sensitive and contentious issues
  • you can conduct thorough local investigation reports, review local investigation reports, fact findings, address and resolve various issues, manage risk, establish and maintain internal results based accountability
  • you manage continuing workload challenges, conflicting priorities and related stressors
