Research Asst Tech Jobs Vacancy in University British Columbia Vancouver Jobs Details:

Seeking a technician/assistant with experience in structural organization and management of research data and reports. The position requires a researcher who is detail oriented, can coordinate with multiple team members and can independently set and meet goals for efficient project management. There is no direct work in the laboratory anticipated, but experience in a laboratory setting, especially with lab record keeping would be advantageous.

The employee will work in a dry laboratory (computer-based office setting) at the University of British Columbia, and subject to the universities workplace safety rules.




Organizational Status




This position will be in the Wasserman group and will report directly to Dr. Wyeth Wasserman, who is the primary investigator of the laboratory. This position will work closely with scientific programmers and research associates within the lab




Work Performed




Working under the supervision of the principal investigator and in consultation with the postdocs and graduate students, the technician/assistant may perform any or all of these duties over the employment period:

  • Review and understand the current data management and structural organization of the research project

  • Communicate and coordinate with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students working on the project

  • Organize existing data and update new information in parallel

  • Clear, concise and detailed record keeping at all stages.

  • Manage data files within a Linux-based computer system.




  • Supervision Received




    Supervised by Dr. Wyeth Wasserman, the candidate would also be expected to report to and accept guidance from senior laboratory members. Meets weekly with supervisor and participates in weekly project meetings.

    May assign work to or reviiew work from undergraduate students working on the project.




    Consequence of Error/Judgement




    Exercises judgement in methods used for assignments. Responsible for completion of tasks. All work is reviewed by supervisors prior to approval of decisions.




    Qualifications




    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute. Degree in Life Sciences preferred.
    Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetic terminology is needed. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in management and detailed record-keeping of 'big data' research projects with multi-level coordination of information from different sources is a huge plus. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to anticipate problems and issues and plan ahead. Ability to effectively use Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel at an intermediate level.
    Experience using Linux-based operating systems would be preferred. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
