Scientist Anatomical Pathology Assistant Jobs Vacancy in Alberta Health Services Edmonton Jobs Details:
The successful candidate will participate in the selection, examination and dissection of surgical and biopsy specimens for routine histology, specialized histology procedures, tumor banking, education and/or research projects. Working in a team environment, duties include support of co-workers, ensuring accurate patient data records, following established quality control procedures, performing gross description and dissection of surgical and biopsy specimens according to standardized dissection protocols. The successful candidate will assist pathologists and residents in the performance of autopsies. Autopsy assistance includes external examination, organ evisceration, organ dissection, block selection, all documentation, special dissection techniques and special testing techniques. The successful candidate will be required to participate in teaching all students and co-workers in both the gross room and autopsy, as needed. The successful candidate will participate in teaching through the Masters of Pathologist's Assistants Program through the University of Alberta. This involvement may include, but is not limited to: teaching masters students how to gross all specimens, evaluating student competency in grossing and professionalism, teaching students in an autopsy environment including evisceration, dissection, and documentation, participating in program meetings, maintaining all relevant documentation related to students.

Master of Science degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist’s Assistant Program required. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification or eligible for ASCP certification and registered for the examination is required Current certification or eligible for certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologist’ Assistants (CCCPA-CCCAP), full scope.
Additional Required Qualifications:
The selected candidate will have the ability to accurately/clearly dictate a description of biopsy or surgical specimens, including CPL levels 5 and 6. Attention to detail, proficiency, aptitude and precision in grossing techniques are required. The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve or assist with resolution of problems is required. The successful candidate must have the ability to operate Windows based computer applications. Excellent English language skills are essential. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and within a team environment.
