The Associate Director & Executive Fellow, Lazaridis Institute will report to the Managing Director, Lazaridis Institute.
The appointment will be for a 2 or 3-year term with the option for renewal.
The Associate Director & Executive Fellow is a senior management position with regular direct interaction with the Dean, Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, other Ontario Executive Fellows, Research Director and the Lazaridis Institute Global Advisory Board.
The Associate Director & Executive Fellow will be supported by a Program Manager, a Associate Director Marketing and operational/administrative staff.
As part of a small team, the Associate Director’s mandate will be both broad and varied, and will include participation in internal operations (finance, human resources, etc.) with a primary focus on external relations (business development, communications, community relations, stakeholder engagement, etc.).
The Associate Director’s roles and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Business Development, Stakeholder Relations & Communications
- Developing a solid and sustainable funnel of Canadian scale-up companies, and an extensive and effective network of Canadian and international mentors, speakers, business accelerators and incubators, finance institutions, venture capital, private equity firms, and government agencies.
- Working with the Managing Director to develop and evolve new income streams through revenue generation, sponsorship and equity.
- Developing a strategy that communicates a positive and professional profile/brand for the Institute locally and internationally.
- When required, representing the Institute in the local, Provincial, and global entrepreneurial ecosystems.
- Ensuring that the Institute is positioned to contribute and advance its mission of developing management to lead globally competitive technology companies.
- Working collaboratively with Lazaridis School of Business & Economics faculty and staff to ensure that the role of the Institute is well understood and valued and that the Institute is effectively integrated into the School.
- Identifying and developing new approaches to programming across the three areas of program focus.
- Nurturing a culture of innovation, creativity, and risk taking as it relates to program development and industry engagement.
- Mentorship and coaching of participants within the executive development program.
- Supporting curriculum development efforts within the Institute and with the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, including the development of non-credit executive curricula for the Institute.
- Initiating and managing partnerships aligned to the Institute’s programming within Waterloo Region (Communitech, The Accelerator Centre, corporations) and beyond, for example in Ottawa (Invest Ottawa), British Columbia (BCTech), and California (C100).
- Designing and reporting on performance metrics of the Institute to the Ontario Government, other stakeholders, and the broader community.
- May be invited to teach in non-credit executive education courses.
- Working with Institute staff to deliver the Executive Development Programs.
- Working with Institute staff to ensure effective management of the Institute’s budget and finances.
- Reporting to and communicating effectively with the Managing Director and the Dean on matters related to the Institute’s operations and finances.
- Supporting institute-related events held by the Academic Programs – as described above.
The ideal Associate Director candidate has a distinctive blend of managerial and leadership experiences and skills that align with the Institute’s aspirations to be the most effective and innovative platform to educate technology business leaders of today and the future. To do so, and to deliver on the roles and responsibilities outlined above, the ideal candidate will have:
- Experience as a senior industry leader and subject matter expert, primarily from the technology sector, with a record of managing, operating, and building a globally competitive technology company.
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial business acumen including bottom line operating experience.
- A proactive and strategic approach to building an organization.
- An understanding of academic administration, including university methods of operating and culture, developed through guest lecturing, volunteering, or governance experience.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain relationships with senior leaders within the public and private sectors.
- A collaborative and flexible working style.
- Tact, diplomacy, and sound judgement to engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders and partners.
- Execution skills to deliver programs that will be effective in the business and academic worlds.
- Proven management and supervisory experience.
- Drive, initiative, resiliency and results-orientation - highly adept at setting priorities, maintaining focus, and delivering on plan.
- A current level of knowledge of technology management, education, and entrepreneurship.
- Undergraduate degree is preferred
