Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province. Our team of health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers that provide the health care or services you may need. This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.
The Laboratory Assistant, under the direct supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor procures, receives, sorts, prepares and dispatches samples and enters information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) prior to testing by the appropriate methodologies and quality assurance techniques. The incumbent is able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations. Positive patient identification and accuracy in specimen handling are critical to the job. The incumbent must be able to adapt to daily changes to policies and procedures. Strict adherence to safety and infection control procedures are required, including techniques and universal precautions.
* Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent B.Sc. OR Grade XII with adequate academic standing in Science subjects plus 1 year of Laboratory experience
* Previous experience in Microbiology preferred
* National Certification preferred
* A high degree of mental and visual acuity is required
* Reasonable manual dexterity and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required
* Technical, medical and chemical terminology as well as LIS (Cerner) experience is preferred
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
* Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work
Temporary full-time position; 75 hours bi-weekly
With an approximate start date of April 2, 2018 and an expected end date of April 2, 2020 (Approx. 24 months)

Shift work may be required including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays

$20.2813 - $22.9749
