The Research Coordinator (RC) will be responsible for the day-to-day management of large-scale research projects and activities for Principal Investigator, Dr. William Miller, which are funded by CIHR, SSHRC, and the National Centres of Excellence. The RC will manage the projects to ensure the efficacy surrounding ethics, data collection, data management, meetings, project activities, project progress, finances, and human resources. The RC will ensure that all project objectives/milestones are being met, project regulations are being followed, and reporting requirements complete. Additionally, the incumbent will oversee the provision of research related staff and students and will manage current employees and students.. This role requires organization and an ability to work well both independently and within a team environment. Strong written and oral communication is essential.
The Research Coordinator will report directly to the Principal Investigator. The applicant will work with other researchers, clinicians, graduate students, and staff.
The Research Coordinator will be based at the Rehabilitation Research Lab (http://www.rehabresearchprogram.com/) at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver, BC. The Rehabilitation Research Lab is affiliated with the UBC Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine.
- Manages research team meetings and provides regular updates on research activities, including timelines and project milestones.
- Ensures that all aspects of the research program are running according to schedule and that the research objectives are met.
- Has primary responsibility for the recruitment of participants, management of participant issues throughout studies as they may arise, and ensure contact between study personnel and participants is maintained throughout their involvement in the study.
- Oversees the research grant finances.
- Oversees and manages logistic and organizational matters related to all participant sessions.
- Coordinates ethics approvals (applications, amendments and renewals) for relevant Research Ethics Boards (UBC, VCHRI, etc.); ensures adherence to patient confidentiality and that research studies are conducted in accordance to UBC and health authority ethical guidelines and policies.
- Coordinates the hiring of Research Assistants and trainees.
- Provides training, supervision, and leadership to Research Assistants and are accountable for the work completed by Research Assistants and other trainees.
- Manages and maintains records of hours worked by Research Assistants and other trainees.
- Leads the training of Research Assistants in quantitative and qualitative data collection.
- Audits and monitors data collection, entry and management procedures to ensure the quality of data collected at multiple sites.
- Oversees the remuneration of study participants.
- Conducts interviews with research participants.
- Manages transcription of interviews and their coding.
- Conducts literature reviews of a complex nature utilizing multiple databases and resources.
- Organizes and participates in meetings to define strategy, goals, and scope of the research project.
- Develops progress and summary reports for the PI.
- Maintains project technology, equipment and materials to ensure optimal functionality.
- Disseminates (preparing, composing, editing and proofing documents) reports, manuscripts, scientific communications and posters/presentations.
- Performs other duties as required.
Works under general supervision in carrying out duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.
In collaboration with the PI, the incumbent will be responsible for delegating tasks as appropriate to research staff and students involved in the research.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent is expected to understand the ethical principles of research involving human subjects and to adhere to these ethical guidelines. Makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of research work. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image, reputation and financial status of the research project. Inappropriate judgment could result in loss of potential research, in funding shortfalls for research grants or contracts, and may flaw the research.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Masters degree preferred. Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Training and/or education and experience in research coordinator and scientific technical writing. Demonstrated and proven experience working with persons with disabilities. Strong conceptual skills and a demonstrated ability to design and carry out research projects. Ability to work with people of diverse needs and excellent skills in problem solving. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent substantive and copy editing skills. Familiarity with health sciences education and research initiatives. Facility in the use of computers (Microsoft Office and NVIVO required). Experience with other research software an asset. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. Exercises tact, skill and judgment when administering quantitative and qualitative assessments and assisting participants in completing questionnaires. Ability to manage and move forward a diverse range of concurrent complex issues and tasks. Ability to work independently and in a team environment while exercising excellent judgment at all times. Familiarity of University policies and procedures would be an asset.
