About CSI:
The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) is a nonprofit social enterprise with collaborative workspaces, communities and acceleration programs in Toronto and New York City. CSI supports over 1000 nonprofits and social mission organizations tackling a range of social, environmental and economic challenges. Our mission is to catalyze social innovation by amplifying the success of our members and fueling a movement for people and planet.

About CSI’s Chief Operating Officer:
This position is the ‘glue’, the ‘backbone’, the foundational infrastructure for the rest of the organization. It also provides key strategic support and works to ensure that the vision is implementing on the ground.

As with all members of the CSI staff team, the Chief Operating Officer will be expected to:

Concretely, the Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for:

Strategy, planning, implementation and financial management

Support the overall success of the organization by ensuring that it all works seamlessly together

Working collaboratively with the executive to create the strategic direction of CSI

Lead on the implementation of the strategic direction with the EDs and Director team

Accountable for the financial planning cycle, integrity and risk assessment of the NPO and the Charity entity

Ensures that appropriate processes and systems are developed and adhered to to ensure the smooth operations of the organization

Governance, Legal and Administration

Support the CEO with governance and committee structure, policies, etc.

Leads the finance, real estate and HR board committees

Governance Membership: Inclusion Diversity Equity Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, Joint Health and Safety Committee and others as needed

Real estate and capital projects

Drives the acquisition of new real estate and capital projects

Accountable for the smooth functioning of property, driving physical upgrades, improvements to energy efficiency, etc.

CSIx affiliate and Partnerships

Working closely with the CEO and Director of Technology on the implementation of the CSIx as well as the integration of the affiliates with the CSI team. Main point of contact for CSI licensed partners.

Fosters partnerships with external stakeholders as needed

HR, Backbone and All Staff team

Lead the ‘Backbone Team’ including the finance, admin, HR, infrastructure and tech team.

Responsible for human resources (development policies, processes, escalations, etc.) and to create an amazing and efficient workplace.

Work with the CSI Toronto Executive Director to lead “all staff” meetings and planning and team building retreats.

Support the TechSoup Executive Director and TechSoup Canada Managers with core operations and development.

Direct Reports include: Director of Finance, HR Coordinator, TechSoup Executive Director and four TechSoup Managers, Executive Assistant and support role with Director of Technology

Supporting a healthy culture and building a place where people want to work

Business Management:
Accountable and responsible for systems to support business analysis, business processes and progress towards our strategic goals and objectives

Decision-support to executive and board

Responsible for living our values as it relates to procurement, initiatives and decisions which reflect our ‘people and planet first’ values including diversity, sustainability, etc.

Qualifications/ The ideal candidate will possess the following :

At least 5+ experience in a similar COO position or senior mgmt position

5-10 years experience in managing complex teams

Experience in social enterprise and business acumen

Experience in board governance of nonprofit and/or charity

Competence with leading teams through strategic planning and budgeting process

Financial modeling and decision support

Experience in real estate would be an asset

Competence dealing with regulatory and legal and insurance issues

Multitasking in a dynamic open-office environment

Proven ability as a leader, facilitator and staff support

Conflict resolution & negotiation skills

Organizational skills

Ability to hold a big vision and then to dive into the weeds to solve problems
