Syncrude Mine/Tailings planning teams are responsible for planning and scheduling the daily movement of ~1,500,000 tonnes of material, and a further ~500,000 tonnes of tailings. The candidate will work within a dynamic team environment and will be required to interact with technical and operations staff. We are looking for new grads that will become an integral part of our Mining/Tailings engineering teams located in Fort McMurray. The successful applicant will begin their career in the Initial Professional Development Program and efforts are made to give the successful applicant a variety of developmental assignments, based on business need that could include: Short Range Tailings Planning – Various positions are available at both our Aurora and Mildred Lake mine sites and are a mixture of field and office work. Diverse responsibilities include:
  • Development of short range tailings deposition plans, measurement of field progress against plans and preparation of charts and graphs for stewardship reports.
  • Communication with Operations leadership and field personnel to support plan execution.
  • 3D digital terrain modeling of tailings basins and storage volume determinations.
  • Contact engineering role for tailings facilities and planning support to capital and development projects.
  • Hydraulic engineering on slurry transport systems and site wide dewatering/water management.
  • Exposure to geotechnical engineering principals and soil mechanics.
Short Range Mine Planning – Various positions are available at both our Aurora and Mildred Lake mine sites. The successful candidate will be involved with truck/shovel mine planning, and/or dispatch work. Responsibilities include:
  • Development of daily/weekly operations plans, daily field tours to monitor implementation of short range plans.
  • Communication with Operations leadership and field personnel to support plan execution.
  • Volume calculations of ore, overburden and reclamation salvage materials, placement schedules of reclamation salvage and overburden material into geotechnical structures.
  • Design of roads, ramps, pits and conducting special tests and projects in the field to support productivity tests.
  • Designing waste dumps building towards final landscape
  • Exposure to geotechnical engineering principals and soil mechanics.
Long Range Mine and Tailings Planning – Roles are primarily office-based. Successful candidates will assist in development of 3-50 year mine plans. Responsibilities include:
  • Development of integrated mine and tailings plans for Syncrude leases.
  • Coordinating with Project Development on capital projects.
  • Truck productivity simulations and analysis, annual haul distance calculations.
  • Creating status maps for regulatory and government submission.
  • Developing implementation plans for closure designs.
  • Designing waste dumps and site wide water management.
Heavy Equipment Operator As an HEO team member, responsibilities include:
  • A rotation in the field operating world class 240-400T Heavy Haulers hauling oil sand feed to crushers and overburden to waste dumps.
  • The safe and reliable operation of equipment with minimal supervision that allows production to meet or exceed targets.
  • Adhering to all Environment, Health and Safety (Loss Management) policies and procedures.

  • Opportunities to operate other pieces of equipment such as Crawlers, Dozers, Graders and other support equipment depending on needs and skill.
  • Successful candidates will work 12-hour shifts, days and nights in a team environment getting first hand mining experience.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Strong computer skills are required, experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs is essential
  • Must be eligible for registration with APEGA
  • Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
Assets:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong oral communication skills; able to communicate to all levels in the organization
  • Knowledge of CADD systems, preferably Microstation and SURPAC
  • Field experience in oil sand mine
