The Development Officer is a member of the Management Team along with the Executive Director, Hospice Services Coordinator, Ty Watson House Manager and the Administrative Assistant. The Development Officer contributes to achieving Hospice's vision and mission by managing all fund development activities for the organization. The Development Officer is responsible to act on behalf of the Executive director in his/her absence.
Position's Primary Objectives:
The Development Officer is responsible for the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising which may include (but is not limited to) individual and corporate donations, grant solicitation, major gifts, and in-kind resources on behalf of the Society.
The Development Officer cultivates and maintains positive, productive relationships with past and present funders, donors, volunteers and the community at large to exemplify and communicate the mission of delivering high-quality, community-based palliative and end of life care to clients and their families as a cause worthy of contribution.
The Development Officer assists the Executive Director as required representing and promoting the Alberni Valley Hospice Society's mission and vision to the community. The Development Officer is accountable to and works closely with the Executive Director for undertaking special projects, capital and annual resource development objectives.
Key Responsibilities: Resource Development:
Prepares and implements a Fund Development Plan which maintains revenue at a level that supports the strategic direction of the organization;
Ensures AVHS meets best practice standards set for resource development by organizations such as AFP, Imagine Canada, etc.;
Ensures all Society resource development practices follow ethical standards including a 'Donor Bill of Rights';
Develops policies and procedures for the staff and volunteers reflecting ethical fundraising practices;
Coordinates the planning and execution of campaigns as well as creation of appropriate campaign literature content and messaging;
Coordinates progressive development activities so as to continually attract financial resources adequate to meet the Society's annual operational needs;
Monitors, evaluates, and approves fundraising activities at all levels of the organization to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved and align with the philosophy of the organization;
Chairs Fundraising Committee;
Facilitates planning and execution of fundraising events as part of the fundraising plan to develop funds for the organization and raise community awareness;
Develops and submits grant applications in support of identified programs, operational and/or capital objective as required;
Assess funding opportunities from newly identified sources and effectively pursues these as appropriate;
Oversees a donor database capable of generating reports to assist with all aspects of fundraising and donor appreciation;
Develops and maintains our Legacy Giving/Donor Appreciation program;
Develops and manages timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner;
Identifies and develops corporate, community, and individual prospects for the organizatio's fundraising priorities;
Monitors resource development trends in the community, region, and country to recommend adaptation of fundraising strategies accordingly;
Fosters an understanding of philanthropy within the organization.
Acts on behalf of the Executive Director in his/her absence;
Provides written reports on resource development activities to the Executive Director as requested (i.e. for board meetings);
Attends board meetings when necessary;
Works with the Executive Director and Board to identify and appoint fundraising working committees when required, and works with these committees to facilitate operation management of fundraising initiatives;
Supervises volunteers and contracted services that are assisting with fund development activities (i.e. Butterfly Effect);
Collaborates with other staff/volunteers responsible for supporting fund development activities (i.e. silent auction, raffles, etc.).
Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations:
Approves the production of all marketing and promotional materials for resource development consistent with AVHS brand;
Promotes and fosters good relations with the media and acts as a spokesperson for Hospice in consultation with the Executive Director;
Works with the Executive Director to develop and manage key organizational messages;
Ensures that an effective communication strategy is crafted, implemented, reviewed, revised, and renewed to ensure desired and ongoing community awareness of AVHS programs and services;
Ensures that designated staff and appropriate volunteers are available to the media when stories are developed to highlight the activities of AVHS;
Coordinates the designs, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for resource development efforts.
Develops an annual income and expense budget for fund development and communications activities including all necessary supplies, equipment, and contract services required to achieve success;
Monitors budget reports for fund development and communications expenses and revenues throughout the fiscal year.
Qualifications (minimum Education and Experience requirements):
University degree in related field (business, commerce, or leadership);
A certificate in Fundraising Management or demonstrated equivalent experience.
3-5+ years of demonstrated experience in the fund development field and management of fundraising activities;
3-5+ years of demonstrated experience in communications;
Applicable knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting charities;
Applicable knowledge of special events planning and management;
Applicable knowledge of the management of volunteer resources;
Applicable knowledge of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy's Ethical Fundraising and
Financial Accountability Code;
Applicable knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of hospice palliative care and the needs of the dying, their families and the bereaved. Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Personal Characteristics:

Organization: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, track details, data, information and activities;
Plan: Recommend strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate process and results;
Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations.
This is an exempt position. A competitive salary is to be discussed.
