Harm Reduction/Adult Services: Outreach Worker
Location: Candidate must have the ability to work in all Durham JHS Offices as well as travel within Durham Region.
Project X-Change is a harm reduction program dedicated to protecting the general public and substance users from contamination caused by indiscriminate disposal in public areas and use of infected items. The program provides access to sterile injection and inhalation equipment, Naloxone and it’s training component, education, referrals to supports and resources as requested along with information promoting safer substance use and safer sex to individuals involved in at-risk activities.
Location: Durham Region Due to John Howard Society’s multi-site locations and service delivery requirements the incumbent may be required to work at any of the Durham JHS site locations.
Status: Irregular On Call
Hours: Combination of day shift (8am to 4pm) or evening shift (3pm to 11pm)

Follow best practices guidelines to ensure safety to self and others
Provide program support services with at-risk individuals
Assist with program promotion
Establish trust and promote the Harm Reduction Program (needle exchange and other related services)
Counsel and educate at-risk individuals in Harm Reduction techniques
Facilitate Naloxone distribution.
Assist with the tracking of statistical data for the program
Provide referral where necessary and requested to the appropriate resources for clients
Provide information to staff and/or clients about agency programs and services.
Provide training and support to all Project X-Change fixed site and satellite locations.
Ensure all forms and reports are completed as needed.
Ensure that the appropriate evacuation procedures are carried out in the event of an emergency.
Administer and manage inbound/outbound internal office supply requests
Maintain office area in a tidy and presentable manner.
Accept and monitor inbound supply shipments as necessary.
Minimum of College diploma in social service related field; preference given to addictions and mental health
Previous experience in addictions counselling, social service work and/or health care is required
Non-judgmental and flexible
Candidate should have a solid knowledge of community and health care services in the Durham Region
Be able to work with a diverse clientele and a strong desire and interest to work with persons at risk in all aspects of daily living
Be able to demonstrate a strong ability to work with a Windows NT/WAN operating system, and able to use Internet, Email, Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Must have own vehicle with minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance
Must have Hepatitis B vaccinations
Able to write simple correspondence, including memos, letters, etc.
Basic mathematical skills
Ability to apply understanding to carry out instructions in written, verbal, or diagram form.

Able to maintain filing systems, basic databases and records

Maintain up-to-date case notes, progress reports and client files with clear rationale for methods and intervention used, and statistical documentation in accordance with the program requirements

Ongoing development of new systems and record keeping methods to ensure funding requirements are met and all documentation is complete, accurate and accountable
May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc
Interacts with clients, staff, visitors and staff from other organizations
Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting
Able to lift items as heavy as 25 lbs.
Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
Overtime as required.
