Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Recreation Program Instructor (North Preston Recreation Centre) in Parks and Recreation. The Summer Recreation Program Instructor leads recreation programs for a variety of age groups. The Instructor designs activities within a planned curriculum and supports persons with disabilities in programs (i.e. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, administering medications, etc.) - may be required to develop a specific program plan. Other responsibilities include: daily duties such as greeting parents and participants, leading activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities, distributing and collecting permission slips for outings, organizing outings and special events, participating in staff meetings.
Education and Experience:
  • At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with preschoolers/children/youth in a recreational setting
  • At least one season/summer of demonstrated program leadership skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of Healthy Child Development
  • Previous experience working with persons with disabilities an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge, Abilities and Training:
  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level C CPR an asset
  • Successful completion of all training requirements (Including High Five and WHMIS) prior to start date
  • Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Police Records Check
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

WORK STATUS: Seasonal - June 21st, 2018 - Aug 31st, 2018
HOURS OF WORK: Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
SALARY: Non Union, $11.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
WORK LOCATION: North Preston Recreation Centre
