Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, our head office is easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit, and within walking distance to the Eaton Centre, Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, and CN Tower. As a national property and casualty commercial insurance provider, we also have offices across Canada.
The Total Loss Appraiser, Auto Physical Damage is responsible for settling Heavy Truck, Trailer and Equipment (HTTE) and Personal Passenger Vehicle (PPV) total losses, reviewing and estimating the value of routine physical damage claims in an efficient and timely manner in order to arrive at an equitable settlement acceptable to all parties involved.
This position will support a team of Claims Adjusters who are responsible for providing efficient and prompt investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and settlement of moderate size and/or moderately complex claims.
What you will be doing:
As an image desk appraiser, settle total losses with clients/customers
Investigate, evaluate, and appraise physical damages losses in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with corporate guidelines:
Review images and estimates on physical damage claims
Contact repair facilities to confirm agreed-upon repair costs, ensuring that charges quoted are not excessive or unreasonable
Estimate the time necessary to repair damage
Create Express Claims estimates
Identify potential recovery situations and refer to Manager
Arrange for removal of salvage for Claimants
Communicate with repair facilities, estimators and adjusters as required to ensure accuracy and completeness of estimates
Recognize and assist adjuster in the preparation of coverage questions, fraud investigations, and large loss referrals.
Provide reports that are clear, concise, and comprehensive (to be used in the further processing of claims and record keeping).
Refer claims to adjuster and/or Manager when the actual damages do not agree with the loss report
Escalate claims when an agreement cannot be reached with an insured, claimant, and/or repair shop
Contact service/salvage yards and parts outlets to facilitate the appraisal process, and to keep abreast of market fluctuations in prices and labour
Monitor repair and service shops and identify any concerns with vendors
Work collaboratively with Supervisors and/or Managers on special projects and assignments when required
Other duties as assigned
What we are looking for :
Post-secondary education in a related discipline (i.e., Auto Body Repair) and / or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum 5 years of estimating and/or appraisal experience
Red Seal Technician certification or I-CAR Gold recognition preferred (or working toward I-CAR Gold recognition)
Working knowledge of the principles and practices related to claims settlement, policy wordings, insurance contracts, fraud investigations, serious losses and coverage questions
Knowledge of the construction of motor vehicles; expertise in the area of modern repair materials and technologies
Knowledge of mechanical vehicle repairs
Proficiency with Mitchell Estimating software
Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
Strong understanding of automobile insurance contract law with respect to automobile repairs
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (specifically Word and Excel)
Current Driver’s License - limited travel may be required
Ability to work within and adapt to PC oriented environments; proficiency with email (Outlook) and Internet skills
Actively pursuing CIP/FCIP designation considered an asset
Fluently bilingual (English / French) considered an asset
